Have you always wanted to tell your local health insurance company that they need to take the health of trans* people more seriously? Why don’t you make it stick? We have posters with demands that you can use:
We only have german posters so far, because the target group is not the general public – it’s the bureaucrats who need to listen, and they will rather listen to the official language.
You only need 2-4 people to do this. Here’s a short guide in four steps: research, prepare, put up the posters and then celebrate!
Research & scouting
First of all, you should research what health insurance branches there are in your city, e.g. DAK, Barmer, TK, AOK, … you can find a list here: https://www.krankenkassen.de/krankenkassen-vergleich/statistik/versicherte/aktuell/
It’s best to take a look at where exactly you want to put up posters beforehand. Where are the health insurance companies located in your city? Where would the posters look good? Are there cameras there? Is there a lot going on at night?
Preparation
Materials: posters, paste, brushes/sponges/tassels, buckets/empty plastic bottles, gloves
Of course you need the posters. You can either design and print your own – or you can order some from us free of charge and we will send them to you. Just let us know how many you need and where: https://cryptpad.fr/form/#/2/form/view/IVKOoefEGgxy-jkiv70OBv1DrcAwe4kWyaQf6JZ8jEA/
Paste to stick the posters to the wall is available as a ready-made powder in DIY stores, for example, which then simply needs to be mixed with water. It is advisable to use more water than the mixing ratio stated on the label so that it becomes nice and fluid. Mixing with warm water works best.
If you don’t have a DIY store nearby, you can also make wheatpaste with water and flour: heat the water, slowly stir in the flour, stir well and bring to the boil briefly. Then leave to cool and it will thicken. The mixing ratio is approx. 250 g flour to 1 liter water, but you can also vary this depending on the desired consistency.
Simply fill the paste into buckets or empty plastic bottles and use either large brushes, tassels or sponges to apply it.
Gloves are also super practical to avoid getting a lot of paste on your hands. If you have a long way home, a change of clothes is also great because sometimes traces of paste remain on your clothes. If you want the poster to last longer, you can draw a diamond pattern on it with a box cutter so that it doesn’t accidentally get torn off.
If you fill the paste into bottles or put buckets into large cloth bags, you are a little less conspicuous, which can be practical 🙂
Going Billposting
You need two to four people, but with more people it goes faster and is more fun.
When putting up posters, it’s best if one person holds the paste bottle and brush and a second person holds the posters. First apply a layer of paste to the wall, then stick the poster to it, and then a second layer of paste over it so that it holds better.
If you are pasting in certain places, it can also be a good idea to have one or two people standing on the corner. Arrange a sign in case the cops come and briefly discuss how you will react if you are caught. Most people won’t care what you’re doing, but sometimes someone will get uncomfortable or threaten to call the police.
Discuss beforehand what your limits are and what you’re comfortable with – then you’re good to go!
Is this legal?
Surprisingly, yes, it’s not „criminal property damage“/Sachbeschädigung because you’re only temporarily changing the facade – as paste comes off again.
But it’s still better not to get caught. A good lawyer would get you acquitted, but a police investigation and trial like that is super annoying, it can have side consequences if you don’t have a german citizenship or are a public official, and sometimes judges don’t stick to their own rules and just want to punish someone.
That’s why it’s better to do it at night, be a bit careful and maybe leave your cell phone at home. And if you do get caught, refuse to testify and write us an email at trans_justice@riseup.net, we will be happy to advise you.
And then – go celebrate!
Going billposting for the first time is pretty exciting – if you do it all the time, it’s not so wild anymore. But plan to have a beer afterwards or go out together. You’ve earned it!
It’s advisable to not go back to the “crime scene”. But if friends of yours take a photo the next morning, that’s fine. If you want us to post it anonymously on social media, please send it to us: trans_justice@riseup.net
